Fertility Treatment Options

Same-sex couples who wish to have a child biologically related to one partner can explore the following options using donor sperm.

Here are your options

Donor Program

Our dedicated donor program is designed for those seeking donor eggs or sperm to help couples or individuals conceive. We also provide an experienced surrogacy program for those who require assistance in growing their family.

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a relatively simple fertility treatment that involves placing washed sperm directly into a woman’s uterus around the time of ovulation. This procedure bypasses the cervix, allowing the sperm to reach the egg more easily.

IUI is often used for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or cervical mucus problems. The process is typically quick and painless, and it can be combined with ovulation induction to improve the chances of success.

Pumping, Storing Breast Milk, and Creating Flexibility

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is one of the most well-known and widely used fertility treatments. IVF involves stimulating a woman’s ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory setting. The fertilised eggs, or embryos, are cultured for several days before one or more are transferred into the uterus for implantation.

IVF is often recommended for women with blocked fallopian tubes, severe male infertility, or when other treatments have been unsuccessful. The success of IVF depends on various factors, including the woman’s age, egg quality, and overall reproductive health.

Surrogacy

Surrogacy involves a woman carrying a baby in her uterus on behalf of another couple. An embryo is created using a donated egg and sperm from a donor or intended parent and is then transferred into the surrogate's uterus.

It's important to note that the surrogate cannot use her own eggs to conceive the child.

Legal Considerations

When considering fertility treatment as a same-sex couple, it’s crucial to understand the legal framework surrounding same-sex parenting.

Queensland Fertility Group follows the National Health & Medical Research Committee (NHMRC) ethical guidelines

on the use of Assisted Reproductive Technology.

Here is what to be aware of

Legal Parenthood

Under Queensland legislation, the birth parents who register the child are considered the legal parents, and the donor has no legal rights or financial responsibilities towards the child. Our Sperm Donor coordinators will discuss these legal considerations in detail before you proceed with treatment.

Surrogacy Arrangements

In a surrogacy situation, the baby is regarded as the child of the birth mother until the intended parents’ parentage order takes legal effect, in accordance with the Surrogacy Bill 2010.

Cost of Treatment for LGBTQIA+ Couples

It’s important to note that under Australian law, Medicare Benefits, including support for infertility care, are only available for defined medical conditions. Without a defined medical condition, you will be responsible for the full cost of treatment, including medications. Costs will vary depending on your treatment plan, the Medicare safety net, and your private health insurance.

The initial consultation with a Fertility Specialist typically incurs an out-of-pocket expense. During your first appointment, your specialist will assess your medical history and may recommend blood tests (many of which are bulk-billed) and an ultrasound scan. The results will help determine the best next steps for your unique circumstances.
